ASCE Concrete Canoe
The Concrete Canoe Competition, sponsored by the American Society of Civil Engineers, requires civil engineering students to design and fabricate a concrete canoe big enough to accommodate four people. Students compete against other universities in a two-day competition which includes men’s, women’s and coed races. The event challenges the students' knowledge, creativity and stamina, while showcasing the versatility and durability of concrete as a building material. The Aces Concrete Canoe will host the ASCE Great Lakes Regional Conference this year which will be held April 24th though the 26th. Civil engineering students have been hard at work on the design and construction of the school’s eighth concrete canoe. For the last five years, UE has placed either 2nd or 3rd in the region, winning invitations to the National Concrete Canoe competition in 2005 and 2006. The project manager is junior Mary Dial, assisted by construction manager and junior Brady Blessinger. Not only do the students design and build the canoe but they also compete in men’s and women’s sprint and endurance races. The academic portion of the competition consists of an evaluation of the final product, a design report and an oral presentation. The University of Evansville placed 6th nationally in 2005 and 15th nationally in 2006. Last year UE placed third in the Great Lakes Region.
