UE Salutes Chris Gwaltney
Chris Gwaltney, associate professor of civil engineering, who presented research titled "Including Sustainability in Bridge Management" at the fourth annual International Conference of the International Society for Industrial Ecology, June 17-20. Over 300 attendees representing over 30 countries met in Toronto, Canada, for the conference titled "Industrial Ecology for a Sustainable Future." The International Society for Industrial Ecology (ISIE) has a worldwide membership of about 500 leading scientists and engineers broadly concerned with the technical foundations of sustainable development. The membership, from academia, industry and government, has expertise in the technological development and societal progression towards industrial systems that are compatible with the functioning of natural ecosystems, e.g., efficient use of energy, material recycling and non-polluting. Many members of the society are advisors to national governments on matters of environmental technology and policy. Gwaltney also made the presentation at the United States Society for Ecological Economics Conference held in New York City, NY, on June 23-27. The theme of the conference was "Creating Sustainability within our Midst: Challenge for the 21st Century. “The United States Society for Ecological Economics,” explains Gwaltney, “provides a venue for a holistic and strong community of ecological economists, social and natural scientists, and people who care for the well-being of this planet and its inhabitants so as to allow its diverse membership to easily communicate with and learn from each other on a regular basis. We believe this will better enable members of the United States Society for Ecological Economics to develop solutions to our most pressing economic, social and environmental problems. |
