When Gulzat Atymtayeva visited Chicago in the summer of 2010, she took an architectural tour of the city’s downtown that would come to shape her passions and her career path. “The structural diversity of the high-rise buildings and the type of materials used left quite a memorable impression on me,” said Atymtayeva, a civil engineering major from Kazakhstan. “Earthquake engineering is a major part of structural engineering, and expertise in that area can help protect communities from the effects of natural disasters, such as the devastating earthquakes we’ve seen recently in Haiti and Japan.”
