Steel Sculpture

A new tradition at engineering departments across the United States is the steel sculpture program, sponsored by the American Institute of Steel Construction. Located on over 130 campuses nationwide, the steel sculpture provides instructors with a valuable teaching tool that contains numerous types of steel members and connections.

The University of Evansville’s steel sculpture is located in the courtyard between the main building and the engineering annex of the Koch Center for Engineering and Science. The steel for the sculpture was donated by Cives Steel Company, Midwest Division, based in Lafayette, Indiana. Other companies donating time and materials to the effort include Mulzer Crushed Stone, Industrial Contractors Incorporated, F.J. Folz Steel, Diamond Equipment Rentals, General Rentals, Spurling Properties, and IMI Corporation, all of Evansville.

Student members of the American Society of Civil Engineers UE Student Chapter provided a majority of the labor required to complete the steel sculpture. Additional assistance was provided by ME/CE Department technician Odie Putler and UE Faculty members Chris Gwaltney, Brian Swenty, Mark Valenzuela, and Dale White.
