Civil Engineering Program Objectives

In accordance with the ABET accreditation criteria, the faculty have established objectives and outcomes for students majoring in civil engineering at the University of Evansville. The purpose of these objectives is to ensure that graduates of the program are adequately prepared to enter the practice of civil engineering. Recognizing that the performance of students and graduates is an important consideration in the evaluation of an institution, a system of ongoing assessment is conducted by the faculty to continuously improve the effectiveness of the program.

Objective 1: Graduates will be prepared for a professional career as a civil engineer or advanced study.

Outcome 1a: Students will be proficient in mathematics and science.

Outcome 1b: Students will understand the fundamentals of engineering science specific to civil engineering.

Outcome 1c: Students will be able to analyze problems and develop solutions in at least four major civil engineering areas.

Outcome 1d: Students will be able to conduct laboratory experiments and analyze and interpret data in at least two major civil engineering areas.

Outcome 1e: Students will be able to complete a civil engineering design.

Outcome 1f: Students will be able to use the techniques, skills and modern engineering tools in use in the civil engineering profession.

Objective 2: Graduates will understand professional practice issues such as teamwork, communication skills, engineering ethics, professional licensure, continuing education, interaction of design professionals and construction professionals, and professional society membership.

Outcome 2a: Students will be able to function on multidisciplinary teams.

Outcome 2b: Students will begin the professional registration process by registering for and taking the Fundamentals of Engineering exam.

Outcome 2c: Students will use effective communication techniques in the completion of engineering projects.

Outcome 2d: Students will have an understanding of professional and ethical responsibilities of civil engineers.

Outcome 2e: Students will have a recognition of the need for and an ability to engage in lifelong learning.

Objective 3: Graduates will have an awareness of how civil engineering projects affect the public and the importance of understanding different cultures in a global work environment.

Outcome 3a: Students will understand the importance of involving the public in civil engineering projects.

Outcome 3b: Students will understand how different cultures interact in a global work environment.

Outcome 3c: Students will be knowledgeable of contemporary issues.
